Caroline McDowell - Marriage and Family Therapist, Behavioral and Mental Health Therapist in Berkeley, CA

Whether you’re struggling with a major decision, grieving a loss, navigating a painful disconnect, or simply feeling stuck in patterns you can’t seem to change, the fact that you’re here reading this means something in your relationships or life doesn’t feel quite right – or isn’t working the way you’d like.

I’m here to help.

You may be overwhelmed by emotions that are hard to name, let alone explain. Or maybe you just have a quiet sense that something needs to shift – but you’re not sure what, or how.

Whatever has brought you here, in this moment, I want you to know: you’re not alone. And you don’t have to navigate this alone.

I know firsthand how powerful and transformative therapy can be … not just as a licensed marriage and family therapist and behavioral and mental health therapist in Berkeley, but as someone who’s also been a client.

Like many of the people I work with, I’ve had to learn how to better understand myself, tune into my own inner voice – to listen more deeply to my intuition, and to trust it.

Creating change – even just taking the first steps toward doing so – can take time. And it’s not easy. But no other investment you make in yourself can be as rewarding as doing the work necessary to explore who you are and create a life you love.

Therapy has helped me move through emotional pain, understand myself more clearly, and form healthier, more authentic relationships. And I know it can help you do the same.

How I Work

Both my personal and professional experiences inform the empathy and care I bring to my work as a mental health therapist.

I know how vulnerable it can feel to open up. I also know how deeply rewarding it can be to do so in a space that’s safe, grounded, and fully attuned to you.

I work with individual adults and couples who are ready – sometimes uncertainly, sometimes urgently – to make meaningful changes in their lives.

My style is compassionate and nonjudgmental, yet active and engaged.

I’m not here to sit silently or offer quick fixes. I’m here to join you in your exploration – asking thoughtful questions, reflecting patterns you might not have noticed, and gently challenging you to grow in the directions that feel most aligned and healing for you.

Just as all of our emotional wounds occur in our relationships, healing and growth also take place in the context of our relationships.

Creating this healing relationship is what counseling and psychotherapy are all about, and it’s why I practice from a psychodynamic, relational, and attachment-focused perspective.

What does that mean?

It means we won’t just talk about the problems and symptoms you’re struggling with. We’ll explore why these things are occurring – the thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and relational patterns that have shaped how you see yourself and interact with other people and the world in general.

I’m here to help you:

  • Understand how past experiences and relationships may be shaping how you relate to others (and to yourself) in the present
  • Acknowledge and change any coping strategies that are getting in the way of new possibilities
  • Develop a stronger, more compassionate connection to yourself, so you can transform the way you move through the world

Above all, I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship itself. The safety, trust, and honesty we cultivate together can serve as a foundation for growth, healing, and deeper self-understanding.

I especially love working with:

  • Individual adults who feel stuck, lost, or burdened by self-doubt, shame, or grief
  • People navigating life transitions – career changes, loss, identity shifts, or major decisions
  • Clients working through relationship challenges, family dynamics, or old emotional patterns
  • Couples who are trying to reconnect, work through betrayal, make decisions about children, or determine whether to stay together or part ways
  • Those who are seeking therapy not because of a crisis, but because they want something more – more clarity, more depth, more connection, more meaning

Whether you’re an individual navigating your inner world or are looking for marriage counseling and couples therapy to try and understand each other again, I provide a steady, supportive presence to help guide the process.

My work is grounded in a deep respect for the complexity of being human – and for the courage it takes to do this kind of work.

This work isn’t about “fixing” you – you are not broken.

It’s about learning to listen to yourself, getting curious about what’s beneath the surface, making choices that are more aligned with who you really are, and making your life truly yours.

If any of this resonates with you, contact me today, schedule a free initial consultation, and see if we’re a good fit for working together. I look forward to meeting you. But the person you’re really about to meet is YOU.
